Twickenham stadium
Twickenham is the home of English rugby. In 2016 the RFU decided to purchase a new LED perimeter system and invited us to advise them on what technology should be chosen and how they could improve the media value of the LED system on TV.
Define:
We undertook a benchmarking exercise to compare the relative LED systems used by the leading Unions across the world. The conclusions of which led to the definition of not only the LED specification, but also to remedial works to the South stand to bring the proposed new LED system significantly closer to the pitch, and also to close the corners to provide 280m of unbroken LED system. The system would need to be best in class and therefore comply with UEFA UCL guidelines.
Develop:
Included in the Define stage was the secondary requirement for a potential large LED screen facing the West Stand Car park and a software platform able to control both the new perimeter system and the existing mid-tier ribbon board. An RFP was therefore developed and sent to those suppliers with proven expertise in supplying both UEFA compliant perimeter systems and also with experience in giant LED screens.
Decide:
We managed the site survey process and then analysed the returns from a number of suppliers to present all of them to the RFU. A final four were chosen to demonstrate their systems at an event organised by us at Twickenham stadium. Each supplier brought approximately 15m of product and were then asked to show the same animations at the same time so a relative score could be applied to each system. During this time each supplier was invited to present their proposal to senior RFU staff.
A final two were chosen from this process and the RFU conducted site surveys for both suppliers.
Deliver:
Once the successful supplier had been notified we advised on the contract, conducted the factory acceptance test, helped manage the installation process and commissioning of the new perimeter system and the control software for both the mid-tier and perimeter.
Drive:
The RFU invited us to operate and provide technical assistance to the new perimeter system along with operating the mid-tier from the same software platform.
